Intensives

Prolonged Intensive Sessions

What is an Intensive?

A prolonged or intensive intervention consists of a series of 1:1 extended exposure therapy sessions with one of our clinicians. A week-long intensive treatment requires a minimum of 20 billable hours (2.5+  hours per day), but can be up to 35 hours per week (no more than 5.5 hours a day). The length and number of these sessions is determined by what is medically necessary in a treatment plan created by you and your therapist. Prior to the start of the Prolonged/Intensive Treatment, there will be an evaluation followed by 1 - 3 planning sessions. The treatment plan for Intensive/Prolonged Treatment can sometimes change over the course of treatment. To maximize the potential for progress, our providers will take treatment out of the office and into your home or community if needed.

Is an Intensive the same as an IOP or PHP (Intensive Outpatient Program/Partial Hospitalization Program)?

No, It Is Not

The Anxiety and OCD Treatment Center of Ann Arbor does not have an IOP or PHP. There are no OCD specific IOPs or PHPs in Michigan. IOP/PHP typically consists of a comprehensive treatment approach including a mix of group therapy, medication management, and 1:1 therapy. The program may not be individualized to meet client’s specific needs.IOP/PHPs are able to accommodate high acuity care where the client is at a higher risk and in need of stabilization.  Our intensives are 1:1 therapy services that extend the typical 1-2 hour appointment time. They are set for a specific number of days/hours with specific target goals. While we do provide medication management at the clinic, it is not required that you are seeing one of our practitioners when you complete an intensive.

For non OCD PHP/IOPs we refer to University of Michigan or Huron Oaks.

Outpatient Setting

Outside Providers

If you are an outside provider looking for your client to attend a one time intensive, please complete the screen below. We are happy to provide intensives to people seeing outside providers. With this, we do require careful screening, planning sessions, and coordination of care to make sure this is the best fit for the client and a smooth transition of care.

Timeline and Steps

Complete the Screen:

Complete the new client screen requesting an intensive. Our office admin will reach out within 24-48 business hours to follow up on the screen.

Complete the new client paperwork:

You will receive an invite to our patient portal and be asked to complete paperwork. Due to being a specialty clinic, we do require more paperwork than most therapy offices. The initial paperwork helps gather vital information to our clinicians in order to provide the best possible care.

Complete evaluation session with therapist:

Once an evaluation time opens up, our office manager will reach out to schedule an evaluation. Evaluation wait times vary. During your evaluation, you will discuss your symptoms, history, what brings you to our clinic, and goals. Our clinicians will have many questions and will discuss a treatment plan. The clinician will determine if an intensive is the right next step in your treatment. If the clinician thinks other treatment needs to come prior to the intensive, your clinician will provide a detailed plan.

Prep sessions and intensive planning:

Intensives can take a few weeks to plan and coordinate. During this time you will meet for prep sessions with your clinician. This might also be when you / caregivers complete any required prep steps that are part of your treatment plan.

Intensives can partially be billed in network to BCBS/BCN. We are happy to provide a superbill for clients that are out of network.
