Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

The vast majority of people experience occasional intrusive and unwanted thoughts: worry about germs, accidentally hurting others, having blasphemous thoughts, as well as occasional compulsive behaviors: uncontrollable urges to redo things until they are just right, rearrange things, seek reassurance repeatedly, checking to make sure a door is locked, etc.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) occurs when these unwanted intrusive thoughts (obsessions) become excessive and distressing, and the compulsive behaviors become repeated, ritualistic and routine.  Both the obsessions and compulsions are generally seen as irrational, but uncontrollable.

Most people who have OCD are aware that their obsessions and compulsions are irrational, yet they feel powerless to stop them.  OCD can be mild to severe, and people can spend a significant amount of time trying to stop or undo their obsessive thoughts and performing rituals and compulsions.

Our clinical staff are recognized experts in evidence-based exposure-response prevention treatment of OCD.
